According to PlantUP implementation plan, specific research axes have been defined on which the proposed infrastructure is created. Specifically:

  • Identification of desirable plant material (plants, seeds) of agricultural and pharmaceutical interest, collection, recording
  • Identification, systematic identification and digitization of data (plant and reproductive material)
  • Development of soil and hydroponic farming methods
  • Development of diagnostic methods for the detection of harmful and beneficialplant health micro-organisms
  • Plant pest study and development of response strategies
  • Evaluation of the induction of plant defense mechanisms in pests
  • Study of the defense mechanisms of plants against harmful organisms
  • Development of extraction, chemical analysis and characterization methodologies
  • Phytochemical study, isolation and identification of natural products
  • Bioactivity and toxicity assessment of isolated natural products
  • Developing and upgrading protocols on a pilot scale (emphasis on "green" techniques) and
  • Manufacture of value added products with application in pharmaceuticals, in the manufacture of food supplements, agrochemicals and cosmetics
